The Work
Work title TBD
From the composer: Questions for the project include: How to unravel the ingrained belief in the supremacy of European practices in the classical orchestral world? How to engage musicians in open and vulnerable conversation that is visceral and visible for all involved? These questions will be interrogated through the practice of conduction, originally developed by Butch Morris (YouTube link).
Getting free through music is the name of the game for me. Using liberation as the prize to keep one’s eye on, while being totally committed to the present is important. It is, in my opinion, a necessary way to move the classical world away from the Western European sensibility and into a more holistic way of music-making that considers the whole musician-as-person, prioritizes experience over perfection, and promotes tapping into the unknown for unexpected results – and learning to live with and love those results; even the ones that may be uncomfortable.
