The Work
Entwine
I plan to explore the question: How can I blend my varied influences to reflect my multicultural heritage? As a Los Angeles born child of Iranian immigrants, my upbringing was characterized by a dialogue between different cultures. My musical education has included playing traditional Iranian instruments and producing EDM in addition to learning techniques of orchestration. What musical innovations can emerge by synthesizing these traditions?
My existing work often engages with Iranian classical music, EDM, and Western classical music as separate entities, occasionally intertwining them. My goal for this project is to evolve my musical language by creating a holistic synthesis of these traditions. Therefore, the driving concept behind my project will be hybridity, exploring ideas such as:
- Hybrid Melody: Can I combine the florid ornamentation of Iranian melodies with the phrase structures of Western melodies?
- Hybrid Harmony: Can I combine Western voice-leading with Iranian microtonal modes?
- Hybrid Rhythm: Can I combine the syncopated grooves of EDM with the improvisatory rhythms of Iranian classical music?
- Hybrid Timbre: Can I blend instrumental timbres in ways that evoke traditional Iranian instruments and electronic synthesizers?
