Dr. Christine Gangelhoff

Dr. Christine Gangelhoff has been a member of the music faculty of The College of The Bahamas since 2007 and has served as Coordinator of the Music Department since 2014. Previously, she served on the faculties of Memorial University of Newfoundland and St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. She holds degrees from Yale University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of North Texas. In addition to performing and teaching, Dr. Gangelhoff has conducted extensive research on Caribbean art music and has become a leading proponent in this field. She was the chief organizer of the 2013 International Symposium on Composers of African and Afro-Caribbean Descent, which brought together musicians, composers, scholars and students to engage with the topic of Caribbean art music. Dr. Gangelhoff is also contributing several entries to the forthcoming Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography to be published by Oxford University Press. She is co-author of the award-winning “Art music by Caribbean Composers,” a comprehensive bibliography documenting the little-known art musical traditions of the Caribbean region. She continues to work on subsequent volumes as she seeks to promote a deeper understanding of and greater visibility for this little-known tradition.

SONiC welcomes Caribbean Composers performed by Bahamian consort C Force and Jamaican pianist Paul Shaw, who will give an innovative presentation of music connected to the Caribbean, including four world premieres. C Force is a chamber ensemble that offers a unique approach to the traditional concept of chamber music. Based in Nassau, Bahamas, they perform a wide range of classical, regional and world music featuring arrangements and original compositions.
